What’s a fruit fly, why do scientists study it, and how did its brain end up in a game?

What is a fruit fly?

A fruit fly is a tiny insect often found near ripe fruit. The kind used in many labs is called Drosophila melanogaster.

Why do scientists study them?

They’re small, grow quickly, and are easy to keep in a lab. A fly can still smell food, learn, and find its way around. Scientists study flies to learn how brains work.

What is a brain map?

Brains contain nerve cells called neurons. They pass messages to one another. A connectome is a map showing which cells connect.

Scientists build these maps from detailed pictures of thin brain slices. Computers trace the cells, and people check the results.

How can a map play a game?

It can’t on its own. People turn the map into a computer model: a program with rules for how cells send messages. More rules turn game events into signals, and the model’s signals into actions, like turning left.

A model based on a fly’s wiring is not a living fly. Playing a game doesn’t prove it learns like one.

How did we get here?

  1. Early 1900s

    Flies help explain family traits

    Thomas Hunt Morgan studies fruit flies to learn how traits, such as eye color, pass from parents to their young.

  2. A young fly’s brain is mapped

    Researchers publish a map of about 3,000 nerve cells in a fly larva: the young, worm-like stage before it becomes an adult.

  3. Adult brain maps and computer models

    FlyWire publishes an adult female brain map with about 140,000 nerve cells. Researchers also publish computer models that use fly wiring to study how signals travel.

  4. 2025–2026

    The brain and nerve cord together

    MaleCNS maps an adult male’s brain and nerve cord, which helps control its body. The map is shared in 2025 and updated in 2026.

  5. Today

    People build games and desktop pets

    With maps and programs shared online, other people can build on them. They connect fly-based models to Doom, Snake, and pets that walk across a desktop.
